Ford B-Max (12 - present)

It looks like a slimmed-down version of the C-Max, but the B-Max drives and handles better than most small MPVs. There are also a couple of nifty additions that make it stand out from its competition. It comes with sliding rear doors and there is no B-pillar. That makes it so much easier to access and exit. The cabin is thoroughly modern and cleverly designed. And, because there are no middle pillars, it feels really spacious. There’s lots of technology although there have been complaints that there are too many buttons. There’s a fairly spacious boot too, with the option of folding the rear seats forward to create even more space. It’s fun to drive, handles well compared with others in the same class and it doesn’t cost a fortune to run. Engines include the entry-level 1.0-litre Eco Boost which develops 98bhp, has a top speed of 109mph and returns around 55 miles to the gallon.

Look out for

•  There has been complaints of water leakages in the offside load area

What we like

•  Wide opening and sliding doors
•  It’s an economical car
•  Smartly designed boot for adding to practicality
•  It’s a good looking car
•  The cabin is spacious and full of technology
•  It’s great fun and really easy to drive
•  There are some good engines

What we don't like

•  The ride quality can be a little harsh at times
